Wade McClurg, Head Coach
Wade McClurg is entering his 2nd season as Head Wrestling Coach at Roncalli High School. Coach McClurg is looking to build off the success that the Rebels experienced in his first season leading the program. McClurg and his staff lead Roncalli to a 19-3 regular season dual meet record, finished the season ranked 15th in the state, and earned a bid to the 2017 IHSWCA Team State Tournament. The team was Conference Champions, Sectional Champions (first since 2011), Regional Runner-Ups, 3rd place at Semi State, and at the State Finals they finished in 17th place. In a season full of team accomplishments, at the IHSAA State Finals Tyce Freije earned an 8th place medal at 120 lbs, and Alec Viduya was State Champion at 113 lbs (first since 1985).
McClurg is a USA Wrestling Bronze Certified Coach. He is the President and Head Coach of the wrestling club, Rebel Wrestling Foundation. Has been a member of the Indiana State Wrestling Association’s National Team Staff since 2008. McClurg was selected by his peers the 2013 ISWA Coach of the Year.
McClurg had served as an Assistant Coach for 8 years. He worked with many of the state and country’s best athletes from 2008-2013 as an Assistant Coach at a club called Central Indiana Academy of Wrestling. Then, McClurg took his talents to Carmel High School from 2013-2016 where he mentored 7 State Qualifiers, 3 State Medalists, and the team was 2x Sectional and 2x Regional Champions. Coach McClurg also played a large role in helping build Carmel USA Wrestling Club into one of the biggest and best clubs in the state during his time spent there from 2013-2016.
A 2008 graduate of Beech Grove High School, he then continued his education at the University of Indianapolis and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
Coach and his wife Ashley (Roncalli Alumni ’08) reside in Franklin Township and have a Goldendoodle named Bear.
Jacob Blackwell, Assistant Coach
Coach Blackwell is entering his 4th season as an Assistant Coach for the Roncalli Wrestling program. Jacob is a 2008 Roncalli graduate. He wrestled for the Rebels for four years. He earned three varsity wrestling letters and qualified for semi-state twice. He finished his high school career with a 3rd place finish at the IHSAA State Finals, during his senior year in 2008. After high school Jacob wrestled for the Greyhounds of UIndy. Most recently, Jacob served his country as in the active duty Navy. He currently resides in Beech Grove, he is employed at Envista as a Freight Auditor, and is working towards getting on the Fire Department. Coach Blackwell also coaches for the Rebel Wrestling Foundation, and is a USA Wrestling Bronze Certified Coach.
Mitchell Goldbach, Assistant Coach
Coach Goldbach is entering his 2nd season as an Assistant Coach for the Roncalli Wrestling program. In high school, he wrestled for the Wake Forest-Rolesville Cougars, located in Wake Forest, NC. While Attending WFRHS, Goldbach compiled a 147-20 record, was a four time state qualifier, and a two time state placer, including a runner up finish as a sophomore. After graduating, he was an assistant coach at Wakefield High School for the 2013-14 season. In 2014, he started attending UINDY, where he was on the wrestling team for two years. Currently, he is finishing up his bachelor’s degree in Sports Management.
Coach Goldbach is very involved in the Rebel Wrestling Foundation, and is a USA Wrestling Bronze Certified Coach.
Riley McClurg, Assistant Coach
Coach Riley McClurg is entering his 1st season as an Assistant Coach for the Roncalli Wrestling program. Riley experienced a very successful high school and collegiate wrestling career. He graduated from Perry Meridian High School in 2013. While attending PMHS, he compiled a 141-17 career record, he won the IHSAA State Championship as a senior at 160 lbs, and he was also a member of 2 IHSAA Team State Championships in 2012 and 2013. Riley spent 3 years wrestling at the Division 1 level for Purdue University and Old Dominion University. He also spent 1 year competing for Marian University at the NAIA level. He is currently finishing up his bachelor’s degree in Finance/Accounting at Marian, while also working as a Marketing Director for Freije & Freije Auctioneers. Coach Riley McClurg is a USA Wrestling Bronze Certified Coach, and is a member of the Rebel Wrestling Foundation coaching staff.
Scot Dawson, Assistant Coach
Scot Dawson is entering his 23rd season coaching, second as the Volunteer Assistant Coach for the Rebels. He is a bronze level certified USA Wrestling Coach, and he helps coach at the Rebel Wrestling Foundation. Prior to joining the staff, he spent the last 15 years serving a variety of capacities at Beech Grove including assistant and associate head coach at BGHS, head coach at BGMS, head coach and board member of the Beech Grove Wrestling Club. During this tenure, he mentored his favorite wrestler of all-time, Wade McClurg, as well as 10 IHSAA state qualifiers, 7 medalists, 2 IHSAA state champs, and 2 USAW freestyle All-Americans. Also, Coach Dawson was actively involved with the ISWA. He was a five time assistant coach of Team Indiana at the USAW National Tournament in Fargo, ND, two time assistant coach of Team Indiana at the Cadet Duals as well as the Head Freestyle Coach at Cadet Nationals and Head Greco-Roman Coach at the Cadet Duals., and was awarded the Indiana State Wrestling Association Coach of the Year in 2006.
Dawson is a 1990 graduate of Beech Grove High School where he was a four year letterman on teams that won 4 Mid State Conference Titles, 4 IHSAA Sectional Titles, 2 IHSAA Regional and two Marion County Championships. He continued his studies at Wabash College, receiving his BA in 1994 while earning four varsity letters on the wrestling team. Furthermore, he won an individual conference title as a freshman and was awarded Captain, Sweat Club Champ(*extra effort award) and Outstanding Wrestler as a senior.
Coach Dawson also holds a M.A.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction from Olivet Nazarene University. He is currently a math teacher at Beech Grove Middle School. He and his wife Amy (who was Coach McClurg’s English teacher in high school) have two children Ellie and Joey. They are parishioners at Saint Michael Church in Greenfield.
Josh Kieffer, Assistant Coach
Coach Kieffer is a 2011 Roncalli graduate. He earned four varsity letters at Roncalli, finished his prep career with a record of 175-15. Josh set the school record for wins with 175 career wins. He was a 4-time state placer and 2-time state runner-up, member of Team Indiana, named 2009 Indy-Star Super Team award, and Academic All-State. Kieffer was a 3x NCAA Division II All-Amercan at 125 lbs for the University of Indianapolis. Graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice.
Ryan Schoettle, Volunteer Assistant Coach
Coach Schoettle comes from a big wrestling family! He was a very successful Rebel wrestler placing in the IHSAA State Finals twice…. 5th in 1995 and Runner Up in 1996! Ryan and his family are members of the St. Roch Parish, and Ryan is an assistant coach at CYO St. Roch Wrestling program. Ryan serves on the RWF Executive Board as the Vice President.
David Himes, Volunteer Assistant Coach
Coach Himes and his family are Roncalli Wrestling legend. Coach Himes was an IHSAA State Runner Up in 1997. He is a key contributor to the success of the CYO St. Barnabas’ Wrestling program as an assistant coach. David serves on the RWF Executive Board as the Marketing Director. Coach and his family reside on the Southside of Indy, and are members of the St. Barnabas Parish.
Erwin Salazar, Volunteer Assistant Coach
Coach Salazar began wrestling in 1979, and wrestled 4 years in H.S. He competed in college but his team was only beginning a club program then. Salazar was head coach at Torrejon HS, in Spain for 3 years and a head and assistant coach at various Jr. Highs over the years. He has been a volunteer assistant coach at Roncalli since 2015. Back in the day Coach Salazar was also a referee for a number of years. Copper and bronze certified as a USAW coach.
